A Very Late Top Ten Tuesday: Switching Places...

So, I hadn't caught on till last night about these great Top Ten Tuesdays from The Broke and the Bookish Blog.  Over at "There's A Book" I saw Danielle's post on the Top Ten Characters I'd Like to Switch Places with for 24 Hours and thought it was an AWESOME idea, so although I'm about 5 days to late, here's my top 10 for this week (and here's the rest of my list Danielle :) )
1. The Narrator (we never know her name!) from Elizabeth Kostova’s “The Historian” she gets to travel all over Europe and meet the most interesting people, and of course it doesn’t hurt that Stephen Barley is in the picture :)

2. Lina from Between Shades of Gray, I know it’s dangerous and depressing, but perhaps the night that they celebrate Christmas in the Arctic camps, that would have been a beautiful and powerful event to be a part of and also on a day when she’s with Andrius would be nice

3. Miss Lumley from The Incorrigible Children of Ashton Place! I’ve always thought it might be interesting to be a governess, now I sort of am since I help with homeschooling my little brother, but it’s so different if you’re living in Victorian England with three loving children who happened to be raised by wolves
4. And Meggie Folchart from Inkheart… she has a father who has the worlds most wonderful reading voice and she has a house filled with books, enough said
5. Arianna from Mary Hoffman's Stravaganza series.  I'm not sure if I would want to be her pre- or post Duchessa but she's a wonderful character, strong and witty, she lives in a Renaissance-like era Venice, and I've just always been obsessed with Venice...and of course there's the adventure and drama of her story, and Luciano and her parents are very wonderful as well which is refreshing from a young adult book
I like these sooo much better than the new gender neutral ones...
6. Celia from The Night Circus!  First of all just being any character in this story would be incredible, it's a world filled with such interesting detail and I really just want to see the circus in person.  But Celia is an intriguing character and I'm not sure what 24 hours of her story I would pick, that's a hard one...
7. Alice.  How can I leave out Alice!  I think I would definitely pick the 24 hours in which she falls down the rabbit hole; I want to see what it really looked like, every little rabbit detail of domestic decoration.  And it would just be fun to think like Alice for 24 hours :)
8. Yael from The Dovekeepers.  Another crazy and possibly depressing answer however how life changing would it be to spend 24 hours as a young Jewish woman fleeing the Romans in the desert or settled in the Jewish fortress at Masada, caring for the doves, living in that culture, and a few other things I won't say because it would ruin the book for you if you plan on reading it, which I highly recommend! (I ended up never writing up a review for this book, but here it is in disguise, it's AMAZING!)

9. Liesel Meminger from The Book Thief.  This is one of my favorite books, perhaps my favorite, so how I could I leave Liesel off this list?  How amazing would it be to hear Hans Hubermann playing his accordion or to wordlessly stand with him as we paint together.  Or to talk with Max and hear his stories or even be the brunt of Rosa Hubermann's tough love...

10. (And my one non-book character) Molly Mahoney from Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium.  I would love to just live one of her days, working with the wonderfully quirky Mr. Magorium (played by Dustin Hoffman) at his most amazing of toy shops and also to borrow her magical piano fingers for the day.  This film also happens to have one of my favorite quote moments of all time:
"When King Lear dies in Act V, do you know what Shakespeare has written? He's written "He dies." That's all, nothing more. No fanfare, no metaphor, no brilliant final words. The culmination of the most influential work of dramatic literature is "He dies." It takes Shakespeare, a genius, to come up with "He dies." And yet every time I read those two words, I find myself overwhelmed with dysphoria. And I know it's only natural to be sad, but not because of the words "He dies." but because of the life we saw prior to the words."

What characters would you love to switch places with for 24 hours??

  1. Love this list! I've been meaning to read Night Circus for awhile, in fact I ordered a UK version of the novel because I loved the edition so much. Your mention of it makes me want to pick it up even more. And also you are the second person I know who adores Inkheart. I've stayed away because I'm not a big fan of high fantasy, but I think I may have to try it.

Love this! So so glad you went through with it! :o)

    1. Thanks! Yes, the Night Circus was amazing, I think I'm going to reread it in November. And I know the UK cover is AMAZING, but I"m so excited because the paper back that just came out mixes the US and UK covers, so I'll probably be investing in that soon :)

And you should definitely read Inkheart, it is AMAZING, one of my favorite books! And I'm not a fan of high fantasy either, it's so different it just happens to have fantastical elements but they are more fairy tale like than anything else, and it's all about books, the love of books, the power of the written world and also imbeds itself in the historical "conversation" of books; it's just really amazing! And the audiobook for the first one is read by Lynne Redgrave and she does a fantastic job, it's my first favorite audiobook, and probably still my favorite one ever.

  2. I've always thought it would be fun to be a governess too! Fab answer. I love how ML always has the right quote on hand. :)

So with you on Alice too.
