Maurice Sendak was a man that exuded energy and life as a person and through his words and artwork. Though he has passed, he will continue to be a source of life and happiness through the wonderful work he has left behind. He was and will always be a giant treasure and presence in the history of children's literature. Here is a slideshow highlighting his career from NYTimes: http://www.nytimes.com/slideshow/2012/05/07/arts/artsspecial/05072012SENDAK-SS.html
I had been planning on writing a post about Mr. Sendak this week, highlighting a work of his that seems to be lesser known. So in his memory, I hope to introduce all of you to another Sendak creation. In 2004 Mr. Sendak joined forces with the Shirim Klezmer Orchestra and created a most unique, hilarious, and energized Klezmer version of Peter and the Wolf, entitled "Pincus and the Pig: A Klezmer Tale". It is not a physical book, it is a magnificent audio performance, narrated by Sendak himself with music from the Klezmer orchestra. It is sharp, witty, and totally "Sendakian". I hope all of you get a chance to hear this wonder! It is available through Amazon on CD or MP3 and also on iTunes.
Rest in Peace,
Mr. Sendak!
